The Queensland Ekka — officially the Royal Queensland Show — is one of Australia's great annual events. Running for 10 days every August at the Brisbane Showgrounds, it draws over 400,000 visitors. Whether you're going for the rides, the show bags, the woodchop competitions or the dagwood dogs, a good day at the Ekka comes down to what you carry.
When Is the Ekka in 2026?
The Ekka typically runs for 10 days in early-to-mid August. The Queensland Ekka public holiday (Show Day) for Brisbane is observed on Wednesday, 12 August 2026. Non-Brisbane regions may observe their own local show holiday on a different date — check with your local council.
Getting There
The Brisbane Showgrounds are at Bowen Hills, easily accessible by train (Roma Street or Central to Exhibition station on the Ferny Grove line). Driving is not recommended — parking is limited and traffic is significant on Show Day. If you're coming from interstate, it's an easy weekend trip from Sydney (2h flight) or Melbourne (2.5h flight).
What to Pack for the Ekka
The Day Bag
You'll be on your feet for 6–10 hours. Your bag needs to be comfortable, compact and secure in large crowds.
